Role: Head of Engineering/Studio Manager/Presenter

When: December 2007 – June 2008 as Webmaster, June 2008 – May 2010 as Head of Engineering

When starting University I offered to help the radio station, and have become the webmaster for the station. This has also involved implementing a brand new Schedule and Listen Again system, as well as other site improvements. In 2008 I was promoted to Head of Engineering, and I have done/am doing the following:

  • Campaigned with Station Manager, Ben Shaw to gain additional funding for some major equipment upgrades from the Union, which we managed to secure after months of planning – I was responsible for drawing up a list of pieces of equipment that we needed, and was/am responsible for installing and maintaining the equipment.
  • Upgraded the studio to be Stereo, and upgraded the webstreams to stereo, which was a big job due to our aging equipment.
  • Produced the Student Radio Chart Show when Xtreme Radio hosted in 2008/09 and 2009/10 – and the accompanying sub.tv links.
  • Created 2009/10 logo (shown above)
  • Created and designed the new website from a basic css template
  • Created facebook application to promote what we’re playing
  • Created last.fm integration to scrobble songs we’re playing
  • Both of these scripts are integrated into a constantly running php script in a CLI, which uses a lot of funky logic to work out what is on-air based on a variety of variables, because of a lack of better logging features in our (free) software.
  • Maintain the website, keep the CMS (joomla) and forum (phpBB) up to date
  • Maintain the studio
  • Dismantled the studio for a studio refit and reassembled the studio from scratch
  • and loads more little things too numerous to mention :)

Awards:

  • I won an Individual Contribution Award 2009 from the Student Union for my work with Xtreme so far.
  • Won silver for Best Technical Achievement at the Student Radio Awards in 2009, hosted by Radio 1

I also present a show on the station every week.

crucial radio

Role: Station Co-Owner, Schedule Manager, Webmaster and DJ.
When:
January 2004 – October 2004

[Website Defunct]

Crucial Radio was a joint venture between myself and Simon Clarke.
We presented a professional front to the station without getting carried away. Myself and Simon Clarke ran Crucial Radio at a loss, as to us it was mainly something we enjoyed running rather than something we intended to make money from. We helped to discover some now well known DJ’s such as James Cusack and Tom Ferguson who, at the time of writing, now both work at Galaxy; the biggest dance station network in the UK. Martin Hewes was also a fine asset to our station, and some of his best bits on the station are available to listen to from his website. I worked on the station from around January until October when the station closed. I oversaw the launch of the station in August, and started the station by presenting the return show, as Crucial Radio had existed for a period of time a few years before.

We unfortunately had to close the station due to the ever increasing cost of running an online radio station, and the ever changing licensing requirements. There are currently no plans for Crucial Radio to return, because we both have other commitments.
